I recently helped my friend Mike develop a marketing plan for his new business. Mike, a web designer, isn’t familiar with computer internals, but that’s not essential for his work.
We discussed Adobe Photoshop and its role in his projects, which led to my surprise that he had never tried GIMP. GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free, open-source image editor available across platforms. It originates from the Unix-like system world.
I’ve been a long-time GIMP user and appreciate its capabilities, from simple edits to advanced features, although it does miss some tools that designers might need regularly. It fits my needs well.
Mike challenged himself to use GIMP for a week, and now it’s a regular part of his toolkit.
While it may not suit everyone or cover all Photoshop functionalities, it’s a solid, cost-effective alternative.
