A vehicle is waiting on a ramp, a technician needs to check a fault code, and the diagnostic tablet will not stay connected. Meanwhile, the service adviser cannot update the job card and a customer is waiting for an answer. This is the kind of disruption a garage network upgrade case study needs to address: not Wi-Fi for its own sake, but technology that keeps the workshop moving.

The example below is based on the common issues seen in independent garages. Details are deliberately anonymised, but the operational problems and approach will be familiar to many automotive businesses across Sussex.

Garage network upgrade case study: the starting point

The garage had grown steadily. It had more ramps, more technicians and a wider range of diagnostic equipment than when its original internet connection and wireless network were installed. The network had expanded in much the same way: a router supplied years earlier, a few low-cost wireless extenders, switches added when another desk or device needed a connection, and cables routed wherever space allowed.

Nothing had failed all at once. That was part of the problem. Staff had learned to work around intermittent dropouts, slow cloud systems and devices that only connected reliably from certain parts of the building. A diagnostic tablet might work in reception but lose signal near the rear ramps. Card payments occasionally took longer than they should. The office printer would disappear from the network and reappear after a restart.

The garage also had a serious security concern. Office computers, customer Wi-Fi, tablets, CCTV equipment and specialist workshop devices were all on the same network. If one device was compromised, it could potentially reach systems that held customer details, invoices and supplier information. That is not a risk a busy small business should have to accept.

The owner did not need a technical lecture. They needed straight answers to three questions: why is this happening, what will fix it, and can the work be completed without stopping the workshop for a day?

Finding the real cause before buying equipment

A network problem is not always a Wi-Fi problem. Poor coverage may be caused by the position of access points, but it can also result from an overloaded internet connection, old cabling, unsuitable switches or interference from the building itself. Garages are particularly demanding environments, with metal racking, roller shutters, machinery, thick walls and changing layouts all affecting wireless signal.

The first step was therefore a practical site review. This covered how the team worked, where devices were used and which services were most important when the garage was at its busiest. It also looked at the existing internet line, the network cabinet, cabling condition, wireless coverage and how different devices were connected.

The review found several issues working together. The wireless extenders were not providing dependable coverage and were competing for capacity. The main router had limited security and management controls. Some older network cables were restricting performance. Most importantly, there was no separation between business systems and less trusted devices.

This matters because replacing the router alone may improve a few symptoms while leaving the underlying weaknesses in place. A good upgrade starts with the business workflow, then selects equipment to support it.

Designing a network around the workshop

The proposed design was deliberately practical. The aim was not to install more technology than the garage required. It was to build a network that staff would barely have to think about.

A business-grade firewall became the central point of the new setup. It provided stronger protection at the edge of the network, clearer visibility of connected devices and the ability to manage access properly. Rather than treating every device as equally trusted, the network was split into separate sections.

Office PCs, finance systems and customer records were kept separate from workshop tablets and diagnostic equipment. CCTV and other connected devices were isolated again. A guest wireless network allowed customers or visiting suppliers to connect to the internet without gaining access to internal systems.

This separation is one of the most valuable improvements for an automotive business. Specialist tools can be expensive and may use older software or operating systems that cannot always be updated as quickly as a standard office PC. Isolating them does not remove every risk, but it limits how far a problem can spread.

Wireless access points were placed where the signal was needed, not simply where a convenient socket happened to be available. In the workshop, that meant accounting for ramps, bays and areas where technicians regularly used mobile devices. The office and reception were treated differently because their needs were different: stable access for administration, bookings, cloud applications and card payment systems.

Where practical, the new access points were connected by cable rather than relying on wireless extenders. This gives each point a more dependable connection back to the main network and avoids passing the same wireless traffic through multiple devices.

Completing the work without disrupting the business

For a garage, installation timing can matter as much as the technical design. Closing the workshop during trading hours is rarely attractive, particularly when vehicles are booked in and parts deliveries are scheduled.

The work was planned in stages. New equipment was configured before installation, which reduced the time spent making changes on site. Cabling and access points were installed around the workshop schedule, with the final switch-over arranged for a quieter period. Existing services were kept running until the replacement network had been tested.

After the changeover, the team tested the services that mattered in daily use. This included diagnostic connectivity at the ramps, cloud job systems, printing, card payments, office devices, CCTV and guest Wi-Fi. Testing should never end with a speed test alone. A fast connection is of little value if the diagnostic tablet cannot reach the system it needs or the receptionist loses access to the booking platform.

The garage team were also shown which network to use on their devices and what to do if they needed support. Clear handover is easy to overlook, but it prevents confusion later. Technology should reduce friction, not add a new set of rules for already busy staff.

The operational difference after the upgrade

The immediate change was consistency. Technicians could use connected tools across the workshop without having to find the one spot where the old wireless signal happened to be strongest. Office staff had a more reliable connection to the systems that supported bookings, customer updates and invoicing.

The less visible improvement was control. The owner could be confident that customer Wi-Fi was separate from business systems, and that CCTV or workshop devices did not have unrestricted access to office data. This is a far better position to be in when assessing cyber risk, managing suppliers or dealing with an issue quickly.

There was also a clearer path for growth. Adding another workstation, ramp-side device or camera no longer meant plugging something into the nearest available socket and hoping for the best. The network had a structure, documented equipment and capacity for planned expansion.

That said, a network upgrade is not a one-off security solution. It works best alongside managed updates, properly configured backups, strong passwords and multi-factor authentication, staff awareness, and ongoing monitoring. The right priorities depend on the garage’s systems, insurer requirements and how much customer or financial information it handles.

What other garages can take from this case study

The main lesson is that intermittent connection issues should not be dismissed as a minor inconvenience. In a modern workshop, network reliability affects diagnostics, customer communication, payments, scheduling, security and the ability to complete work on time.

It is also worth avoiding a quick-fix approach. Another extender may temporarily improve coverage, but it will not separate sensitive systems, replace ageing network hardware or identify a failing cable. Equally, not every garage needs enterprise-level equipment. The sensible answer is the one that fits the premises, number of users, critical systems and plans for the next few years.

A straightforward assessment should establish where coverage fails, which devices need priority, whether business systems are separated, and whether the internet service is suitable for the way the garage now operates. From there, decisions become much clearer and costs are easier to justify.
