Why AI browsers are different
Traditionally, a browser has been a window to the web. AI‑enabled browsers promise more: they can read a page, summarise it, translate it, pull out key data, and even complete routine actions. That convenience can be a genuine productivity boost.
However, these capabilities rely on sending what’s on your screen to an AI service so it can analyse or act on it. That’s the point where business risk creeps in.
Where the risk comes from
Default settings in many AI tools tend to favour a smooth user experience over strict security. If a browser quietly shares on‑screen content with an external service, that can include emails, client records, financial details or internal documents open in another tab.
Some AI features can interact with websites during logged‑in sessions. That makes them helpful for automating simple workflows, but they could also be manipulated by a malicious page and tricked into exposing information without the user realising.
Understand the data flows
Before adopting any AI browser, map where data goes:
- Is AI processing performed locally or sent to the provider’s cloud?
- What information is transmitted (on‑screen text, screenshots, page context, form data)?
- How is data stored, for how long, and who can access it?
- Can you opt out of data retention or model training?
This matters for cyber security, contractual commitments, and regulations covering personal or confidential data.
Policy, compliance and configuration
Your policies should clearly state what staff may and may not process with AI features, including any categories of restricted information. Build AI settings into device management so controls are enforced consistently rather than left to individual users.
Look for administrative options that let you:
- Disable AI features where they’re not needed, or restrict them to approved sites.
- Prevent data from being used for training.
- Block automated actions that could change data or make purchases.
- Audit usage and receive alerts for unusual behaviour.
Day‑to‑day use: safer habits
Even with sensible settings, everyday behaviour matters. Encourage teams to:
- Avoid using AI features while viewing highly sensitive material.
- Close unrelated tabs when using an AI sidebar or page assistant.
- Double‑check outputs before accepting automated actions or form fills.
- Report any unexpected prompts, permissions or actions immediately.
Training and awareness
Because AI tools can make repetitive tasks quicker, the temptation is to use them to rush through mandatory training or compliance activities. Make it clear that clicking through with an assistant is not the same as completing a requirement properly, and could create audit issues.
Provide short, practical training explaining how the AI works, what it can see, and how to use it responsibly.
A measured approach: pilot, then scale
We’re still early in the lifecycle of AI browsers. Their benefits are real, but so are the unknowns. Start with a small pilot, complete a risk assessment, configure safeguards, and gather feedback. Expand only when you’re confident convenience isn’t coming at the expense of security or compliance.

- Review data handling, retention and training policies with your legal and compliance teams.
- Configure central controls and disable non‑essential features.
- Set rules for when AI features must not be used.
- Provide user training and clear reporting routes.
